{"id":102,"date":"2014-09-11T14:40:08","date_gmt":"2014-09-11T18:40:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.taggcleanhands.com\/blog\/?p=102"},"modified":"2020-01-28T09:58:21","modified_gmt":"2020-01-28T14:58:21","slug":"why-did-we-make-the-infection-control-symbol-package","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.taggcleanhands.com\/blog\/?p=102","title":{"rendered":"Why did we make the Infection Control Symbol Package?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.taggcleanhands.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Sept-11-2014-blog-title.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-103 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.taggcleanhands.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Sept-11-2014-blog-title.jpg\" alt=\"Sept 11 2014 blog title\" width=\"810\" height=\"279\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.taggcleanhands.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Sept-11-2014-blog-title.jpg 810w, https:\/\/www.taggcleanhands.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Sept-11-2014-blog-title-300x103.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.taggcleanhands.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Sept-11-2014-blog-title-100x34.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.taggcleanhands.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Sept-11-2014-blog-title-150x51.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.taggcleanhands.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Sept-11-2014-blog-title-200x68.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.taggcleanhands.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Sept-11-2014-blog-title-450x155.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.taggcleanhands.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Sept-11-2014-blog-title-600x206.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 810px) 100vw, 810px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So&#8230;. why <em>did<\/em> we make the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.taggcleanhands.com\/icsymbolpack\">Infection Control Symbol Package<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p>Because there was nothing there.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Long before our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.taggcleanhands.com\/products\/floor\/20\/detail\">first hand sanitizing station<\/a> was even an idea, we\u2019ve been steeped in the language of visuals.&nbsp; When designing signage, recognition and readability are two of the most important factors in their effectiveness, and for ages we\u2019ve been using symbols to maximize both.<\/p>\n<p>There is an impressive language of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Symbol\">symbols<\/a> in common use.&nbsp; You can convey that smoking is acceptable with a picture of a cigarette, or that it isn\u2019t by framing that in a crossed circle.&nbsp; That crossed circle can be mixed with other symbols to create other meanings \u2013 don\u2019t walk, don\u2019t run, don\u2019t wash in hot water.<\/p>\n<p>The best part about using visuals (which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.taggcleanhands.com\/blog\/?p=44\">we\u2019ve<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.taggcleanhands.com\/blog\/?p=50\">written<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.taggcleanhands.com\/blog\/?p=65\">about<\/a>!) is that (say) an Italian speaker and a Japanese speaker will both understand the \u201cno smoking\u201d sign, even if they can\u2019t understand each other.<\/p>\n<p>So, when it came time to use our sign design expertise to help the field of infection control, we were dismayed to find that there was nothing available symbolically to convey the concepts we kept hearing about.&nbsp; Things like \u201cHand Hygiene,\u201d \u201cIsolation\u201d and \u201cOutbreak.\u201d&nbsp; To us, that\u2019s like missing the letter \u201ca\u201d on our keyboard.<\/p>\n<p>So, working with input from specialists across the country to assist in their design, we made our own.<\/p>\n<p>We used universal colours and shapes to imply meaning that supports any text they contain.&nbsp; The red stop sign shape, the yellow-and-black hazard stripes and red-on-white \u201cX\u201d all convey meaning in and of themselves \u2013 if you can\u2019t read English, you can still glean the correct meaning of the symbols.<\/p>\n<p>Realizing that these constituted a powerful resource, we collected all that we had worked on and released them for free download on the internet under a Creative Commons License.&nbsp; Why give them away?<\/p>\n<p>Because <em>these are really your symbols.<\/em>&nbsp; If we kept them to ourselves, they would do very little.&nbsp; On the internet, however, they can spread.&nbsp; If someone out there needs a symbol, they\u2019re there for them to use.&nbsp; This is more important to us than all the licensing fees we could have charged.<\/p>\n<p>Symbols have power, and we want them to be used for good.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>You can find the Infection Control Symbol Package <a href=\"https:\/\/www.taggcleanhands.com\/icsymbolpack\">here<\/a>.&nbsp; Please download and share.&nbsp; It&#8217;s released under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 3.0 Unported License.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>So&#8230;. why did we make the Infection Control Symbol Package?
