Lesson 1: Hand hygiene promotion must include everybody.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n We\u2019ve written about this before<\/a>, but many medical disciplines tend to think of hand hygiene as a human resources issue \u2013 focusing their attention almost exclusively on staff training and compliance.\u00a0 While this still has some positive effect on patient safety, it neglects ambulatory patients (folks coming in for dialysis or an examination) and visitors \u2013 who often outnumber staff!<\/p>\n\n\n\n We also feel that this can and should make its way to other public spaces, like schools, offices and retail. \u00a0We\u2019re not quite there yet; retail in particular seems to like the small sanitizer stands<\/a> that simply lack pull power at a distance<\/a>. They just aren\u2019t substantial, well-placed or readable enough to accomplish their potential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Lesson 2: Advanced technology is sexy but often not sustainable.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The basic, modern concept of hand hygiene has been around for over 150 years now, ever since Ignaz Semmelweis<\/a> made the connection between hygiene and infection, and even then it was a controversial idea.
