Hand Hygiene Graphics Reviewed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The original intent of this column was to showcase how graphic design could improve healthcare practices, without resorting to criticism.\u00a0 We&#8217;re not going to do that today.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s simply that without all the pieces of the puzzle it&#8217;s impossible to see the whole picture, which is why we&#8217;re breaking that rule.\u00a0 After all, we can make the claim that healthcare graphics need help but without examples you&#8217;d just have to take our word for it.<\/p>\n<p>As the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.who.int\/gpsc\/5may\/en\/\">May 5th<\/a> World Hand Hygiene awareness campaign (this year with the exciting topic of combating antibiotic resistance!) is getting under way, we felt that that would be a great topic for some criticism as there are many, many examples out there.\u00a0 This, folks, is how your various local and governmental organizations say &#8220;hand hygiene&#8221;:<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.taggcleanhands.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Clean-Hands-Protect-Lives.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-62\" src=\"https:\/\/www.taggcleanhands.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Clean-Hands-Protect-Lives-237x300.jpg\" alt=\"oha Clean Hands Protect Lives\" width=\"237\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.taggcleanhands.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Clean-Hands-Protect-Lives-237x300.jpg 237w, https:\/\/www.taggcleanhands.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Clean-Hands-Protect-Lives-100x126.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.taggcleanhands.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Clean-Hands-Protect-Lives-150x189.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.taggcleanhands.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Clean-Hands-Protect-Lives-200x252.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.taggcleanhands.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Clean-Hands-Protect-Lives-300x379.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.taggcleanhands.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Clean-Hands-Protect-Lives-450x568.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.taggcleanhands.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Clean-Hands-Protect-Lives-600x758.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.taggcleanhands.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Clean-Hands-Protect-Lives.jpg 747w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 237px) 100vw, 237px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This example by the Ontario Hospital Association is very typical in its design errors.\u00a0 It&#8217;s mistakes?\u00a0 The slogan lacks contrast with the light background, making it hard to read for those with limited visual acuity.\u00a0 The subtitle is almost invisible from close-up, never mind at a distance.\u00a0 Try squinting your eyes as a way to see this &#8211; the upper area almost disappears completely!<\/p>\n<p>What is most confusing is the hand&#8230; symbol?\u00a0 Collection of&#8230; bacteria?\u00a0 What are those blobs?\u00a0 Why are they five different colours?\u00a0 Why does the visual not say &#8220;clean&#8221; it &#8220;vibrates&#8221;, making the text hard to read.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s that hand again!\u00a0 I can see what they were trying to do: show how dirty your hands can get (or are, or will be&#8230; the poster isn&#8217;t clear!) and hope people make the logical leap and increase their efforts at keeping their hands disinfected.\u00a0 However, assuming that this is intended for healthcare workers (which is why I&#8217;m going easy on them using scientific names for the green germs!) wouldn&#8217;t an image of action (reinforcing their daily routine) get the point across better?\u00a0 Maybe show some hands washing names of bacteria off their hands perhaps?\u00a0 We don&#8217;t know, we&#8217;re not the CDC.<\/p>\n<p>There IS that little symbol of hands rubbing (or clapping?) in the lower right, but good luck seeing that from across a room.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.taggcleanhands.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/JCYH.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-59\" src=\"https:\/\/www.taggcleanhands.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/JCYH.png\" alt=\"JCYH\" width=\"150\" height=\"156\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.taggcleanhands.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/JCYH.png 150w, https:\/\/www.taggcleanhands.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/JCYH-100x104.png 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is by the well-meaning people at Ontario Public Health.\u00a0 It&#8217;s their logo for their entire hand hygiene campaign.\u00a0 The simple design and sans-serif text is quite a good thing!\u00a0 Black and white?\u00a0 Easy to reproduce on any background or media imaginable!\u00a0 Overuse of the open palm symbol?\u00a0 Unfortunate.<\/p>\n<p>Just humour us for a second and cover the bilingual text with your finger.\u00a0 You may as well do it for the other two examples, too.\u00a0 What does the image say to you when there&#8217;s no text to replace it?\u00a0 &#8220;High five&#8221;?\u00a0 &#8220;Stop where you are&#8221;?\u00a0 &#8220;I have a question&#8221;?<\/p>\n<p>Is it waving?\u00a0 Clapping?\u00a0 That CDC one looks like a zombie reaching out for you.\u00a0 The one at the top seems to be a vaguely hand-shaped cluster of paint droplets floating in a puddle.<\/p>\n<p>The take-away is that it doesn&#8217;t say <a href=\"https:\/\/www.taggcleanhands.com\/products\/stations\/show\">hand hygiene<\/a>.\u00a0 It just says &#8220;hand&#8221;.\u00a0 Without the &#8220;hygiene&#8221;, which we shouldn&#8217;t have to add is the reason for these designs.<\/p>\n<p>Showing action in the graphic is one way of solving this problem.\u00a0 That way, those who don&#8217;t read English can just follow along with the picture and still get the point.\u00a0 So what?\u00a0 We&#8217;re a healthcare organization, are you trying to say that we employ people who can&#8217;t read?\u00a0 Not in the slightest.\u00a0 Even English speakers read faster when they&#8217;re reading pictures, and pictures with action say more in the same space.\u00a0 A picture is &#8220;worth a thousand words&#8221;
